I moved to Hangzhou in 2023 because I fell in love with China's garden city the first time I visited, back in 2016. The AI industry turned up around the same time, and the robots followed soon after. Now the teams setting the pace in both are on my doorstep, so I get to spend my days learning from them firsthand and passing on what I find.

- Over three years on the ground in China's AI capital
Where I'm useful
Chinese AI & robotics, decoded
Is DeepSeek safe to build on? Are the robots as far along as the videos suggest? I read the launches, the papers and the local chatter so you don't have to.
Where AI earns its keep
Working out where AI genuinely earns a place in how you operate, and saying so plainly when it doesn't. I've watched too many demos die on the way to production to sell you one.
Cross-border, both ways
Chinese teams finding their feet in the wider world. Western teams working out what to make of Chinese technology. I've lived on both sides of that gap, and crossed it enough times to know where it's narrowest.
The decade before AI
A decade in London technology before AI was the job. My speciality was data and integration, which turns out to be most of what it needs in production.
Recent notes
Mostly Chinese AI and robotics, written up as field notes. The rest is whatever I've been building or playing with.

When I'm not at the desk
Most of my life happens in front of a screen. The rest of it happens behind a camera or under the sea, and both feed back into the work way more than they probably should.
